Brief description
The objective of the research project is to support the University of Stuttgart to become climate-neutral by 2035 at the latest. Based on selected buildings on Vaihingen campus, possibilities for a climate-neutral campus shall be exemplarily analyzed and demonstrated. The project is planned as a “reality lab” with a transdisciplinary approach and the involvement of various stakeholders at the university via different participation concepts.
Campus hoch i focuses on the issue how climate neutrality can be achieved in new buildings and existing buildings with refurbishment needs including their integration in the neighborhood via intelligent technologies and innovative approaches. This shall be demonstrated with four buildings (two existing and two new buildings) on Vaihingen campus. Due to the different characteristics of the selected buildings, e.g. related to thermal building mass and use, the results are expected to be transferable to a great extent also to other (external) university buildings and university districts.
Along with the technological solutions for the realization of climate-neutral buildings, an essential objective of the project is also a broad participation of interested and affected parties as well as a close coordination with the relevant parties already in the planning phase. The participation in the planning phase shall be realized e.g. via hackathons, participation portals, workshops, surveys, or social media.
Furthermore, the public shall be informed about the project and be involved: A “climate barometer” is planned, i.e. a light installation up to 10 meters high, on the façade of a building near the S-Bahn exit. This light installation shall visually inform to which extent climate neutrality is already achieved at the University of Stuttgart. In a “builders' hut” that is realized as e.g. pavilion, the technologies and innovations such as e.g. new building materials and intelligent control systems shall be presented and visualized.
